Who is VOLCANO?

VOLCANO is a consultancy specialised in community placemaking.

We believe in the power of people coming together to create places of wellbeing and resilience. Communities that thrive and engage with their surroundings. A sense of belonging beyond buildings.

We exist to bring the social aspect of urban development into focus. We use data-driven community placemaking – as a method to support culture, creativity, and togetherness; as a strategy to create healthy urban life.

circular approach

Our team is made up of analysts, strategists, activists – we are thinkers and doers. Our process gives us the ability to support projects through all phases of development, facilitation, and implementation.

OUR STORY

VOLCANO has changed over the years, constantly adapting to solve societal challenges as they arise. From managing musicians, to supporting creatives in business endeavors, to creating entire festivals, we developed the knowhow and network that would enable us to expand into new contexts. We continue to see the value that cultural initiatives bring to their surroundings and the untapped potential in creative businesses as part of the community. And this puts us in the position to facilitate and activate communities, by merging our history of creativity with strategy.

Volcano’s journey
ESTABLISHMENT

Volcano was established as a music management firm, managing iconic artists and bands such as Nephew, Kashmir, VETO among others.

ROYALTIES

The first youth talent programme, Royalties, is launched. This is the beginning of many more of the sort: Flags, Odense Makers and Moment.

FROST FESTIVAL
We host the very first FROST Festival – a winter festival with 20+ events revolving around music and light, hosted in untraditional venues in Copenhagen.
TAK ROCK

We host Tak Rock – an initiative helping young rock musicians get closer to performing on established stages.

BREMEN THEATER

VOLCANO administers operations at a culture venue / nightclub. The old venue encapsulates traditional Copenhagen, but is used in a new context – creating a reminiscent setting for modern events.

LILJEPRISEN

VOLCANO wins Liljeprisen – known as the Danish “Oscar” for  experiences. Liljeprisen applauds our ability to create culture-business partnerships that disrupt traditional sponsorship agreements.

KULTURERHVERV

Alongside other organizations, VOLCANO establishes KulturERhverv. The idea for this network comes from the common opinion that we lack a mutual meeting point between culture and business.

NORDICLA

After years of doing business in Los Angeles, our founder noticed an increase in challenges faced by Nordic artists trying to make it big. Cue the creation of NordicLA – an entity creating opportunities in the US for artists and creatives, by activating and facilitating networks on both sides of the Atlantic.

BACKSCATTER

A natural next step for VOLCANO as we increase our involvement in community development – humanistic data analytics. Backscatter uses soft city sensing to gain an in-depth understanding of communities and how people interact within them.

THE MOVE

We move our office from Sydhavn to Tunnelfabrikken, the future epicentre of arts and culture in the Nordics. We share this space in Nordhavn with Home.Earth and Tunnelfabrikken.

DCI

VOLCANO’s largest project to date – Danish Creative Industries – is launched. We kick off a series of DCI events aiming to bridge the gap between creatives and investors.

THREE TEAMS & A COMMON GOAL.

Community Lab

We analyse the inner workings of communities and make strategic recommendations, using state of the art methods within social data science. Our Community Lab is run by the anthropological data science studio, Backscatter. Read more about the Lab’s work here.

All urban environments contain empty or non-descript areas. We see the potential in unused spaces – a potential for meeting places that create belonging and togetherness. We develop placemaking strategies that create, engage, and activate communities as an integral part of urban life.

Community Places

Community Life

The nurturing of creativity, art, and culture in our communities is essential for the societal aspect of healthy urban life –  we use these things to actively bring people together and nurture creative innovation. Our international platform, NordicLA, extends this reach beyond borders.
